What are the conditions and requirements for transferring a domain?

For a domain transfer to occur and to be successful there is a set of requirements and rules that need to be followed.

In order to transfer .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .us domain names to us the following rules must apply:
  1. The current status of the domain must be unlocked and active. The default status of most domains is usually locked. The domain locking prevents the so-called domain hijacking, which is an unauthorized transfer of the domain. The domain has to be unlocked in order for it to be transferred successfully.
  2. The registrant must obtain their EPP/Authorization key either from their current registrar and present it to the new one, or generate it from their Control Panel and to, again, present it to the new registrar.
  3. There should at least 15 days left until the domain's expiration date. Less than that are not advisable.
  4. As per ICANN regulations, the domain name can't be transferred for at least 60 days after its registration or 45 days after a renewal.

Notes:

Beginning January 1, 2014, new ICANN rules related to domain registration/transfer ownership are in effect for all domain registrars. When you transfer a domain name with a registrar for the first time, the new rules require that a domain's transfer be validated via email. Validation email messages are sent to the listed WHOIS owner contact ( domain name administrative contact). If the verification process is not completed within 15 days, the domain name will enter a suspended state and will be locked against the additional activity or transfer.
