What is a Server?

There are two types of servers – a machine and a program.

-  A machine server is very powerful computer that has a certain amount of resources. They are being stored in large facilities called data centers, under close observation by people make sure that the servers don't overheat, don't crash etc.

-  A program server or a server software is a type of software that is designed to be operated on a computer server. It communicates with the server's hardware. There are several types of server software:

• web server software – it responds to the requests of other software - ex. Apache Web Server
• database server software – a software that provides database services- ex. MySQL; PostgreSQL.
